How We Started

The Nazareth Area Food Bank was started in the St. John’s Lutheran Church. When it started it was a large closet in the church. We started to outgrow that space and started looking for a building to house us and have more room. We found the building we are currently in that was owned by the ESSROC Company at the time. A campaign was started to raise money for a downpayment on the building. Through the churches and community we had a 100,000,000 penny drive. We achieved our goal and were able to purchase the Lackawanna Train Station which is now our home. The Wood Company (now Sodexo) donated the shelving units we now use to stock our non-perishables items and the Vision of Eagles donated the commercial refrigerator and commercial freezer. After a few years the freezer was being filled to capacity so we were able to add a walk-in freezer to the building. It has been a blessing and thanks to our support from the community and partnerships we continue to grow.
