The Nazareth Area FOOD BANK
NAFB Garden – We are an all-volunteer, non-profit, federally tax exempt 501 (c)(3) organization
Nazareth Area Food Bank Garden
Welcome to our garden, where we grow fresh veggies for the food bank! Since 2012, our volunteers have been pitching in to plant, water, weed, prune and harvest a variety of delicious and healthy foods. On harvest days, our veggies can go from the garden to food bank clients within an hour…that’s fresh food!
Are you interested in volunteering?
Many hands make for light work! Garden volunteers meet Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings from April through October. We garden for about 1 hour each time, and no prior gardening experience is needed. Families with kids of all ages are welcome, but anyone younger than age 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult while at the garden.
To join us, please email nafb.garden@gmail.com to provide your name and contact information. We send out email notifications each week about our specific meeting times, what we plan to do that day, and any changes due to inclement weather.
Gloves, water cans and a trowel are also helpful to bring along, but not required. All you need to bring is sturdy shoes, sun protection and yourself!
What we grow
Have you ever wondered how potatoes grow underground? Would you like to be amazed at how big a zucchini can get in 3 days? We grow these and so much more!
Each year we plant tomatoes, peppers, beets, eggplant, potatoes, cabbage, onions, carrots, cucumbers, green and yellow beans, zucchini and a variety of squash. We plant marigolds along the sidewalk in front of the garden, which really looks beautiful all summer long. Sunflowers always seem to spring up in the garden as well!
Garden tasks
Our volunteers plant seeds and seedlings, water plants, pull up weeds, and harvest all the produce as it becomes ready. We carry the harvests over to the food bank across the street, where it is distributed to food bank clients.
Early in the season, we rake, weed, and prepare the planting beds. Using shovels and wheelbarrows, we move compost and wood chips into their proper rows, roll out plastic and ground cloth, and sometimes dig holes for posts and stakes. Doing whatever you are physically able to do is all the help we need. We appreciate all our volunteers!
